We have several organizations offering courses which may be of interest to our members:

Alberta Agriculture & the "BEE TEAM"

Administered and sponsored by:
Beekeepers Commission of Alberta.
Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD),
Growing Forward, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative.
The program consists of several entry level and advanced workshops and several conference format events each year.

Bee-ginners Beekeeping Short Course - Airdrie May 3 & 4, 2013
Airdrie: Friday & Saturday May 3 & 4 at the Airdrie Agricultural Building.
This course is for beginners. The course is 2 days and focuses on biology and management of honey bees in Alberta. Based on this knowledge, students will learn the practical aspects of purchasing bees, assembling equipment, seasonal management through the year ensuring colony survival through winter. Topics will include production, harvesting, extracting, bottling and selling of honey.

Airdrie on May 3 & 4
Edmonton on May 10 & 11.
Registration fee is $ 148.41 including books, handouts and lunch on both days.

Alberta Green Certificate (Alberta Agriculture) - Beekeeping Technician (Level 1)
This is a "hands-on" mentoring program in 2 versions: adult education without a fee and a high school credit version
Adult Education version:
The trainee works with an experienced, mentoring beekeeper.
There are modules which the student works through at their own pace and the sequence they determine.
There are oral tests in the field and one receives either a "complete" or "not complete" status.
The program is administered through 4 regional colleges; the closest to Calgary being Olds College

Grand Prairie Regional College
GPRC offers a "Certificate in Commercial Beekeeping", a vocational program for the education and training of commercial beekeepers.
This usually runs from January to November. It is delivered at the Fairview campus. ... more information from GPRC.

Calgary & District Beekeepers Association.

Monthly meetings have a training/information component with no charge.

Backyard Bees
(Apiaries for Bees and Communities, founded 2010 by Eliese Watson) (www.BackYardBees.ca/courses)
Standard short course format with a fee structure typical of private sector course providers.

BC Dept of Agriculture - Bee Masters 2012.
This course is advanced, 5 days in lenght and offered every second year.
